Religious Freedom In Pakistan
EDM number 271 in 1993-94, proposed by David Alton on 15/12/1993.
That this House is shocked by the death sentence given on 2nd November 1992 to a Pakistani Christian, Gul Masih, by an Islamic court, on the evidence of one man, for 'blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammed'; is appalled that 11 year-old Salamat Masih has been charged with a similar crime for which he could be given a death sentence; registers its concern at the previous stabbing, and possible poisoning, of two other believers; expresses uncertainty for the future safety of non-Islamic religious minorities; and calls on the Pakistani Government to take whatever measures necessary, including amending its blasphemy laws, in order to ensure the protection of all its citizens, regardless of religious belief.
