H M Prisons - Sock Supplies
EDM number 252 in 1993-94, proposed by Alan Meale on 14/12/1993.
That this House is appalled to learn that as Christmas approaches H. M. Prisons Services have awarded a contract for several hundred thousand pairs of prisoners' socks to a Turkish manufacturer; finds it strange that such a contract could have been found to be acceptable when explicitly stipulated in the tender document was the requirement that companies applying should be from within the EEC and holders of a BS5750 authorisation, a qualification of manufacturing and trading standards established in the United Kingdom and reminds the Home Secretary and the President of the Board of Trade that Turkey is not a member of the European Community as it has been excluded from membership amongst other reasons because of its human rights violations and its contravention of EEC laws on employment, health and safety, wages and conditions.
This motion has been signed by a total of 53 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
