Public Sector Pay

EDM number 251 in 1993-94, proposed by Alan Meale on 14/12/1993.

That this House disagrees with Her Majesty's Government's stated intention to extend its public sector incomes policy via a public sector pay freeze until 1997; realises that with tax increases announced by the Government last March and in the recent Budget, the living standards of some 5.8 million public sectors workers and their families have already been dramatically reduced; believes that such workers should not have to both take the blame and pay the price of failed Conservative Government policies, and that it is fundamentally wrong for them to be singled out in this way whilst their counterparts in the private sector remain unaffected; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to retreat from these stupid and vindictive measures as such actions will only lead to the creation of an undesirable duo of lower living standards for public sevants and their families, with yet a further undermining of public services.
