Classification Of Estuarine Waters

That this House believes that the Government, in seeking to define estuarine waters in relation to the EC Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive, should employ the definition used by the National Rivers Authority, of a line between such topical features as define the seaward boundary of the estuary; further believes that the effect of allowing estuarine waters such as the Solent to be classified as coastal waters will have a detrimental effect on tourism, recreation and wildlife in the areas concerned; recognises the extra cost involved in properly protecting estuarine waters; recommends that such costs should not fall solely on the customers of those water companies involved but should be spread nationally; and urges the Government not to weaken standards on the treatment of sewage released into estuarine waters.
