That this House is deeply distressed by the escalating death and destruction in Angola caused by the war UNITA launched following its rejection of the results of the United Nations-monitored multi-party elections of 29th and 30th September 1992 which the United Nations now estimates is resulting in a thousand deaths per day; supports the efforts of the United Nations to secure a ceasefire and a peaceful settlement, but believes that more effective action is now required by the UN Security Council in order to compel UNITA to agree to a ceasefire and to comply with its resolutions and the Bicesse Peace Accords which are the internationally recognised basis for a lasting settlement in Angola; therefore calls upon the UN Security Council to extend the sanctions imposed against UNITA in order to secure its total isolation and to take action to require that all UN member states enforce all the measures imposed against UNITA; and calls upon the British Government to press for such action by the UN Security Council and to play a more active role in support of Angola's democratically elected Government of National Unity and the Angolan people in their efforts to restore peace and democracy, through the provision of all appropriate assistance, including emergency humanitarian aid.
