Damage To Further Education By League Tables
EDM number 211 in 1993-94, proposed by Jeff Rooker on 08/12/1993.
That this House regrets one of the consequences of publishing raw league tables in the further education sector is the change in policy of Coulsdon College, Croydon where in order to 'play a part in making young people aware of the sometimes harsh reality of the world' students will no longer be entered for examinations at the college if there is evidence of under achievement relative to potential; notes that the change of policy announced by the principal is claimed to be a direct result of league tables and other statistical information playing a significant role in how colleges are being judged by performance; believes this to be a misguided policy change undermining the culture of the further education sector which is likely to reduce access by students of all ages and restrict opportunity for late developers; and therefore calls for simplistic and misleading league tables to be abandoned and replaced by measures of value added in respect of the education process.
