Overpackaging
EDM number 206 in 1993-94, proposed by Colin Pickthall on 08/12/1993.
That this House welcomes and supports the Friends of the Earth campaign on overpackaging; notes that one-third of all household rubbish in the United Kingdom consists of packaging materials, much of which end up in landfill sites causing significant pollution problems; regards the consumption of resources consumed in the production of unnecessary packaging as profligately wasteful; welcomes the support of 80 per cent. of the British public for a reduction in the amount of packaging; recognises that voluntary action will lead to only limited improvements; and calls upon the Government to bring forward a comprehensive waste-management strategy involving statutory targets for the avoidance, re-use and recycling of packaging as a step along the road towards environmental sustainability.
