Structure Of Government In Wales

EDM number 193 in 1993-94, proposed by Dafydd Wigley on 07/12/1993.

That this House regrets the failure of the Government to provide, in the context of its proposals for the restructure of government in Wales, the establishment of an elected parliament for Wales, and in consequence have proposed a structure of unitary authorities many of which are too large to be truly local and too small to be strategic authorities; that the creation of such a Parliament would provide a strategic body that could co-ordinate the work of unitary authorities in Wales, as well as democratise the Welsh Office and the quangos in Wales; that such a structure would have facilitated unitary authorities more closely aligned to the natural communities of Wales, including the retention as unitary authorities of current borough or district areas such as Arfon, Cynon, Dwyfor, Llanelli, Meirionnydd, Merthyr Tydfil, Montgomeryshire, Rhondda, Rhymney Valley and Taff Ely, areas which all have a strong community identity; and urges the Secretary of State for Wales to reconsider his legislative proposals to this end.

This motion has been signed by a total of 3 MPs.
