Corruption In Brent (No. 5)

EDM number 1701 in 1993-94, proposed by Ken Livingstone on 01/11/1994.

That this House congratulates the seven Tory councillors who voted for the Labour motion to remove Tory Housing Committee Chair Bill Duffin from his post or abstained in order that the motion be carried; notes that during the debate it was revealed that Councillor Duffin had deceived the manager of Arlington House Hostel in Pound Lane into believing he was visiting her premises in the company of a council employee, when he was accompanied by his employer, corrupt local businessman Jim Carlon, who was attempting to examine the hostel's methods of maximising their housing benefit income so that Mr Carlon could carry out the same exercise at his 70 unit Mulroy Hotel, which had just undergone a reasonable rent assessment which reduced his income by ú50,000 per annum; further notes that had Mr Carlon been successful in his deception he would have increased his annual income by ú174,000 at the taxpayers' expense and yet Tory Council Leader Bob Blackman defended Councillor Duffin's conduct throughout the debate even though it has been revealed that the ownership of the Kingdom public house, for which Councillor Duffin also corruptly assisted Jim Carlon in overturning the council officers' recommendation against planning consent, has now been sold to an offshore company named as Anoka; and invites the local estate agents, Gladstones of Walm Lane, to explain their involvement in this property, Councillor Blackman to resign following his failed attempt to cover up the sleaze and corruption in the administration over which he presides, and the Chief Executive of Brent to call in the Fraud Squad.

This motion has been signed by a total of 6 MPs.
