That this House notes the new proposals made by the European Commission regarding the General System of Preference; deplores the lack of time given for consultation with British manufacturers; considers that the proposals as currently drafted will dramatically increase the cost of imported raw materials which will have a significant effect on the price of finished goods with the consequence of company failures and job losses; and calls on the President of the Board of Trade, and the Foreign Secretary, to use their best endeavours to ensure that suitable and acceptable arrangements are made to negate the effects of this proposal, or to roll over the existing scheme for a further year to allow time for consultation and appropriate representations to be made.
