Media And Public Life

EDM number 1688 in 1993-94, proposed by Peter Bottomley on 31/10/1994.

That this House recognises, whatever the details of error in particular investigations, editorial decisions, and stories that may on occasion lack factual accuracy, balance or fairness, that it is the task of Parliament to protect the role, responsibility and opportunity of independent media to collect, sift and use their own judgment in deciding what to make public; and believes even when editors are slow to acknowledge deliberate or accidential mistakes, the process of public and political service should be expected to take place with the media criticising and commenting on politicians; and expects soon to return to this normal state. (Relevant registered interest declared).
