Whitland Creamery

EDM number 1651 in 1993-94, proposed by Ieuan Wyn Jones on 25/10/1994.

That this House condemns the action of Dairy Crest in deciding to close the Whitland (Dyfed) Creamery at brutally short notice; notes the company's refusal to develop higher value products in anticipation of the new milk pricing regime when the opportunity to do so presented itself; notes that the transportation of large quantities of raw milk out of south-west Wales, a major milk-producing area, for processing elsewhere makes no economic sense and that the cost of this transportation will be met by milk producers; deplores the fact that Dairy Crest has now all but turned its back on Wales; and calls upon Dairy Crest to co-operate fully in facilitating the purchase of the creamery by another milk-processing enterprise, upon Milk Marque to provide milk at favourable terms to such an enterprise, and upon the Welsh Development Agency and the Welsh Office to assist in the setting up of a financial package to promote this development.
