Compassion In World Farming
EDM number 1634 in 1993-94, proposed by Harry Barnes on 21/10/1994.
That this House warmly welcomes the publication by Compassion in World Farming of 'For Their Own Good; A Study of Farm Animal Mutilations', which condemns the tail-docking of pigs, the de-beaking of hens and turkeys and the castration of lambs; notes with approval the statement of the Farm Animal Welfare Council that 'it is difficult to give general approval to any system of husbandry that relies on painful mutilations to sustain it'; and agrees with CIWF on the need for a radical rethink of the impoverished intensive systems which currently dominate the pig and poultry industries.
