Listing Of Brazilian Mahogany

EDM number 1581 in 1993-94, proposed by Simon Hughes on 17/10/1994.

That this House registers its grave concern at the over-exploitation, environmental and social devastation and illegal activities associated with the trade in Brazilian mahogany; notes that scientific evidence suggests that current utilisation of Brazilian mahogany, botanical name Swientenia macrophylla, is incompatible with the long term survival of the species Swientenia macrophylla; and consequently calls on Her Majesty's Government to support the listing of Brazilian mahogany 'Swientenia macrophylla' under Appendix II of the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) 'mindful that this is not a trade ban' at the 9th Conference of the Parties of CITES taking place on 7th to 18th November 1994.
