Death Threats Against Taslima Nasrin
EDM number 1569 in 1993-94, proposed by Simon Hughes on 21/07/1994.
That this House is alarmed that the Bangladesh Government has sanctioned the arrest of the renowned writer Taslima Nasrin for allegedly outraging the religious feelings of Muslims; is particularly concerned that the Government has failed to take any action against the religious right-wing who are openly calling for Nasrin's death; notes that Nasrin has repeatedly denied that she ever stated that the Koran should be thoroughly revised, the central allegation against her; believes that even had Nasrin made this statement, she should not have been subject to criminal sanction; is further alarmed that four editors have also been charged with the same offence after publishing satirical articles; is extremely concerned that the Bangladesh Government is allying itself with the campaigns of the Islamic fundamentalist parties; and calls on the Prime Minister to make an urgent, direct and personal approach to the Bangladesh Prime Minister for the charges to be immediately dropped against Taslima Nasrin and the four editors.
