Government Commitment To Nuclear Disarmament

EDM number 1566 in 1993-94, proposed by Alan Simpson on 20/07/1994.

That this House notes that, in his written reply to the honourable Member for Blaenau Gwent, Official Report, 11th July, column 437, and then Minister of State for the Armed Forces, the Right honourable Member for Richmond and Barnes, and new Chairman of the Conservative Party, stated that `complete and general nuclear disarmament is a desirable ultimate goal'; contrasts this view with that expressed by the Prime Minister in Question Time on 14th July, Official Report, column 1165, where he asserted he would not have anyone in his Cabinet who had advocated the abolition of nuclear weapons while also suggesting they should be retained; welcomes the conversion of the new Tory Party Chairman to the cause of nuclear disarmament; and urges the Prime Minister to follow his lead.

This motion has been signed by a total of 12 MPs.
