Introduction Of Domestic Violence Legislation

EDM number 1549 in 1993-94, proposed by David Hanson on 19/07/1994.

That this House calls upon the Government to include in the next Queen's Speech legislation based upon the Law Commission's draft bill Domestic Violence and Occupation of the Family Home and to take all possible steps to ensure that the criminal justice system works to protect women and their children from domestic violence, instead of letting them down as it currently does on all too many occasions; also notes that the Lord Chancellor recently announced that measures to introduce the draft bill would be introduced only when a suitable opportunity occurs; and condemns the Government for this lax attitude, especially in the light of the fact that women are regularly being killed because of domestic violence, as witnessed by the tragic death recently of a woman in a Welsh Women's Aid refuge in North Wales.
