Turkish Intervention In Cyprus

EDM number 1538 in 1993-94, proposed by Keith Speed on 18/07/1994.

That this House acknowledges the fact that the Turkish intervention in Cyprus on 20th July 1974 was undertaken in conformity with the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee to which the United Kingdom, Turkey and Greece were parties, and was motivated by the need to protect the Turkish community on the island and their right to exist; notes the recent efforts which have been made under the auspices of the United Nations, including the goodwill mission of the Secretary General, to promote confidence building measures and to find a basis for a sustainable settlement; affirms that the contribution of the parties should remain within this framework; and welcomes the fact that Mr Denktash, the Turkish Cypriot leader, has extended his full support and shown a positive approach to the process, which should be shared by his Greek Cypriot counterpart.

This motion has been signed by a total of 23 MPs, 2 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
