ELECTRICITY EXECUTIVES' SALARIES AND THE PRIME MINISTER

EDM number 1525 in 1993-94, proposed by Jim Dowd on 14/07/1994.

That this House condemns the exorbitant pay rises for the senior executives of the electricity companies including the rise last year of ú103,000 for the Chief Executive of London Electricity and the rise from ú172,721 to ú239,982 for the head of Yorkshire Electricity, which represents in both cases a pay increase of 38 per cent; believes that this contrasts starkly with the difficulty many people face in paying the VAT increases on their electricity bills; and requests the Prime Minister to state whether his Office has intervened in the electricity companies' pay negotiations as it has done in those surrounding the rail dispute and, if this is not the case, condemns him and his Government for glaring inconsistency and double standards in his policy, namely that his Office states already low-paid signal workers must remain low-paid yet senior managers in the electricity industry have their mouths stuffed with gold while the Prime Minister looks on approvingly.
