The Building Industry And The Recession
EDM number 139 in 1993-94, proposed by Alan Meale on 01/12/1993.
That this House is concerned that the building and construction industries are currently suffering their worst recession since the 1930s, with record levels of bankruptcies and job losses and more than 450,000 jobs having disappeared in construction since the summer of 1989; recognises that such economic paralysis could not have afflicted the industry at a worse time with vital skills, expertise and investment being lost; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to act immediately to kickstart a recovery in the nation's economy so as to end the present ludicrous situation of mass unemployment, lost production and billions of pounds of benefit payments being paid out to building workers, and others, idle through no fault of their own.
