Anabolic Steroids
EDM number 1328 in 1993-94, proposed by Tom Pendry on 15/06/1994.
That this House welcomes the wider exposure given by The Cook Report to the dangers of anabolic steroids; is deeply concerned by their increasing use in a recreational context with an associated loss of life; recommends that London Weekend Television submits the cast of its Gladiators programme to regular testing by the Sports Council's Doping Control Unit and then publishes the results in order to quash any doubts about steroid abuse; and notes that the Government's lack of action on this matter is in stark contrast, not only to the Home Secretary's recent rhetoric on the evils of drugs, but also to its self-appointed duty under EU Council of Ministers Resolution 92/C44/01 and the Anti-Doping Convention which states in Article 4, part 1, 'The Parties shall adopt where appropriate legislation, regulations or administrative measures to restrict the availability ... as well as the use in sport of ... anabolic steroids.'.
