British Rail Fare Increases

EDM number 1321 in 1993-94, proposed by Hugh Bayley on 14/06/1994.

That this House condemns British Rail's decision to ban passengers holding saver and supersaver tickets from using early morning trains to London from York and Leeds; notes that the return fare for these passengers has been increased from ú45 to ú95 between York and London, and from ú44 to ú93 between Leeds and London, an increase of 111 per cent.; recognises that these fare increases form part of British Rail's preparation for privatisation of its East Coast main line, and that the increases will divert yet more traffic from rail to road; and calls on British Rail to restore the validity of saver and supersaver tickets on these trains, and to guarantee that it will not introduce any further restrictions on the availability of affordable fares.
