That this House is appalled that the United Kingdom has the highest mortality rate for breast cancer in the world with more than 15,000 women who have or have had breast cancer living in this country; notes that despite the high incidence of the disease the quality of treatment and quality of life for breast cancer patients still leaves much to be desired, with the best care from specialist teams in specialist centres only available on a limited basis with the result that many women are treated by consultants with no special interest in breast cancer which then denies them the opportunity to consider the alternative treatments available thus avoiding unnecessarily radical surgery; therefore believes that women should be better informed about breast cancer, particularly the treatment options available, and should receive a range of psychological, social and physical support services where needed; and further believes in the vital role of the breast cancer nurse in breast cancer prevention and care.
