Cycling Head Injuries
EDM number 1284 in 1993-94, proposed by John Heppell on 24/05/1994.
That this House views with interest the introduction of legislation in New Zealand and Australia making the wearing of helmets by cyclists mandatory; is aware that reports and research from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America suggest that such legislation in the United Kingdom would not only reduce the number of serious head injuries, but would also result in savings of more than ú100 million a year; notes that the week commencing 12th June is National Cycling Week; and calls on the Government to support the campaign of Headway, National Head Injuries Association, to increase the number of cyclists wearing helmets, and also to examine the possibility of legislation to make such wearing mandatory on the public highway.
