Success Of The United Kingdom Machine Tool Industry
EDM number 1266 in 1993-94, proposed by Martin O'Neill on 19/05/1994.
That this House congratulates the United Kingdom machine tool industry on its achievement in recording a trade surplus in 1993 for the first time since 1983; notes that it has come about despite a sharp fall in demand in the European Union which has traditionally accounted for 55 per cent. of United Kingdom machine tool exports; welcomes the strong growth recorded in exports to non-EU countries which increased by 25 per cent. during the year; draws particular attention to a 295 per cent. increase in exports to China which is now the United Kingdom's third largest market; and looks forward to the further success of the machine tool industry in building on its technological skills and vigorous export drive to develop new and expanding markets.
