Rejection Of Confidence Building Measures In Cyprus
EDM number 1261 in 1993-94, proposed by Edward O'Hara on 19/05/1994.
That this House notes with disappointment the failure of the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to comply with the 30th April deadline for accepting the confidence-building measures, with particular reference to the fenced area of Varosha and the opening of Nicosia Airport; trusts that the UN Secretary General will apportion the blame for this latest breakdown in relations to where it properly belongs; urges the UN Security Council now to fulfil its commitment to consider alternative ways to resolving the Cyprus problem in the event of a stalemate; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to press for the withdrawal of Turkish troops from Cyprus and for the accession of Cyprus to full Membership of the European Union at the earliest possible date and without making it conditional upon the solution of the Cyprus problem.
