Murton Colliery
EDM number 1249 in 1993-94, proposed by John Cummings on 18/05/1994.
That this House notes with concern the long delay in reclaiming the Murton Colliery spoil heap and the adjoining area of the Hawthorn mine situated in the constituency of the honourable Member for Easington; recognises that these areas of land are essential for the regeneration of the constituency which has lost four collieries and 5,000 jobs in five years; deplores the action of British Coal and Ogdens in delaying the reclamation of the site until the market for coal improves so that some 500,000 tons of coal can be exploited from the spoil heap; and recognises that British Coal and the nation owe a debt of honour to the former mining communities of East Durham where unemployment is unacceptably high and that this land should be reclaimed immediately and turned over to local authorities forthwith so as to be used for much needed industrial development.
