Post Office Privatisation
EDM number 1248 in 1993-94, proposed by Dafydd Wigley on 18/05/1994.
That this House records its opposition to proposals to privatise the Post Office; notes that such proposals could lead to a two-tier service in which the price of postal services could be higher in rural areas; draws attention to the fact that the consequences of privatisation will therefore be most severe in rural areas and small communities, especially in Wales and Scotland, and could place at risk the continued viability of many smaller sub-post offices, including rural post offices, should the contracts to handle Royal Mail work across the counters be jeopardised, causing hardship to many vulnerable groups of people, including pensioners and the disabled; regards these schemes as being motivated primarily by the desire for the money which will accrue from sale to the private sector; and calls for their withdrawal forthwith.
