Theatre Royal, Stoke-On-trent

EDM number 1242 in 1993-94, proposed by Robert Maclennan on 18/05/1994.

That this House notes with concern the precipitate action of Stoke City Council in deciding to close the Theatre Royal in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent; notes that the closure of the theatre will result in the loss of 22 jobs, and will deprive Stoke of a major entertainment venue which has a national reputation for innovative and high quality productions, and is frequently used by national touring companies; notes that the Council has been aware of the theatre's difficulties in reaching electrical fire safety standards for five years, and that the theatre management have committed themselves to meeting those standards as quickly as possible; notes also that the Council had co-operated with this programme and was due to carry out an inspection of progress on the day on which it announced the withdrawal of the licence; and calls upon the Council to reverse its decision and to restore its co-operation with the management and to assist them in meeting the required safety standards as quickly as possible.
