Daily Express And Homelessness
EDM number 1216 in 1993-94, proposed by Clive Soley on 11/05/1994.
That this House deplores the attempt to smear the homeless by the Daily Express and notes that one of the people it has chosen to pillory is a 16 year old homeless boy who is epileptic and schizophrenic and who has attempted suicide; notes that the Daily Express says that their investigation of the streets of London shows that this boy is 'not quite as desperate as he might appear'; believes that the last thing an adolescent with these problems needs is a national newspaper making political capital out of his plight; further challenges Sir Nicholas Lloyd, the Editor of the Daily Express, to come out of his plush and cosy office to spend some time sleeping rough so that he can abandon the arrogant and stupid notion that living on the street is better than living in a proper home; and believes that if he cannot find the courage to do this then he should campaign for more affordable rented housing and a benefit system that removes the disgrace of homelessness from our streets.
