Human Rights And Democracy In Pakistan

That this House notes with deep concern the deteriorating political, economic and human rights situation in Pakistan and the spread of violent conflict, particularly in the Karachi area; views with great concern the arrests of a large number of political activists, elected members of parliament and the Senate, in particular that of senator Mrs Nasreen Jaleel, who recently addressed a meeting in this House on the political and human rights situation in Pakistan; urges that all constitutional safeguards and democratic liberties be scrupulously observed in Pakistan; calls on all political parties in the country to refrain from any activities that might serve to inflame an already tense and dangerous situation; further notes that a genuine democracy presupposes the safeguarding of the full liberties of all ethnic, religious minorities; and calls upon the government of Pakistan to strictly observe its moral obligation and commitments under international law in this regard and for the immediate release of all political prisoners in the region.
