Homeless People And Voting Rights
EDM number 1171 in 1993-94, proposed by Harry Barnes on 04/05/1994.
That this House warmly welcomes the joint initiative by the respected Shelter and Charter 88 organisations to highlight the fact that many hundreds of thousands of people in England without a permanent home may not be registered to vote in local and European elections; further notes their fear that the Government's proposed removal of the duty of local authorities to find permanent accommodation for households accepted as homeless will lead to many homeless people shifting from one short term tenancy to another and further threaten their eligibility to vote given that it can take up to 16 months to register for the franchise; and calls upon the Government to introduce a rolling register so that the maximum possible number of people can register to vote.
