Tributes To Members Who Have Died
EDM number 1146 in 1993-94, proposed by Tony Benn on 28/04/1994.
That this House greatly regrets that there is at present no way in which tributes can be paid in the House when honourable Members die; believes that a simple and dignified procedure for allowing this to be done should now be instituted; calls for a minor change of procedure to allow the announcement of the death of an honourable Member to be made from the Chair at the end of questions, and before any other business is taken; would welcome the introduction of a custom under which the House would then be invited to stand for a moment, and for any honourable Members who wished to do so, to pay a brief tribute to the life and work of the honourable Member who has died, such tributes to continue at the discretion of the Chair; and invites Madam Speaker to rule accordingly.
