Re-Appointment Of Miss Beata Brookes
EDM number 1145 in 1993-94, proposed by Rhodri Morgan on 28/04/1994.
That this House condemns the President of the Board of Trade and Industry for reappointing Miss Beata Brookes to be Chairwoman of the Welsh Consumer Council in spite of the opposition of Lady Wilcox, who chairs the National Consumer Council on which Miss Brookes also sits, purporting to represent the interests of Welsh consumers, a function which it is impossible to combine with the job of Chairwoman of the Conservative Party in Wales, a post which Miss Brookes has held since 1993 and continues to hold; finds it abhorrent that the two salaries of ú4,730 per annum given to Miss Brookes are in fact being used to subsidise the operations of the Conservative Party in Wales; notes that Miss Brookes has also been appointed by the Government as Wales' sole representative on the Economic and Social Committee of the European Union; regrets the Prime Minister has not followed the commonsense back to basics principle he issued on 28th November 1991, Official Report, column 608, in which he said that no one who held an executive post in a political party should be appointed as a chairman or vice-chairman of a public body; and therefore calls on him to rescind the President of the Board of Trade's appointment of Miss Brookes.
