Job Losses At Killingworth
EDM number 1141 in 1993-94, proposed by Ronnie Campbell on 28/04/1994.
That this House expresses deep concern over British Gas proposals for their Northern HQ office complex in Killingworth, which would result in the loss of 750 jobs in an area of already high unemployment and which has already suffered huge job losses in the shipbuilding and mining industries; recognises that the loyal workforce are the most cost productive and longserving in the whole of the company, and work in buildings which are purpose-built to meet the needs of the company; calls upon the President of the Board of Trade to recognise the disastrous effect these job losses would have on the families concerned and also on the local economy; and urges him to intervene and seek urgent meetings with the company in an attempt to ensure that the 750 jobs at Killingworth are saved.
