Centenary Of The Irish Congress Of Trade Unions
EDM number 1139 in 1993-94, proposed by Harry Barnes on 27/04/1994.
That this House warmly salutes the centenary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, which was formed in 1894 by the Belfast, Cork and Dublin trades councils; notes that the Irish Congress of Trade Unions brings together Roman Catholic and Protestant working people from over 80 constituent trades unions; praises the Irish Congress of Trade Unions' courageous activities against both sectarianism and terrorism, including its Counteract Initiative, which opposes sectarianism in the workplace, and the work of its youth committee in organising the Anti-Sectarian Stand Campaign; and further notes the refusal of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions to be diverted down either Unionist or Nationalist avenues as exemplified by its excellent campaign for peace last year which involved 17 joint rallies with the CBI in Northern Ireland and which attracted well over 100,000 people.
This motion has been signed by a total of 47 MPs.
