Concessionary Tv Licences
EDM number 1118 in 1993-94, proposed by Greg Pope on 26/04/1994.
That this House notes the existence of concessionary television licences for pensioners living in residential homes, nursing homes, almshouses and sheltered housing schemes subject to certain conditions; further notes that after the restructuring by Hyndburn Borough Council of the warden schemes in council sheltered housing over 160 Hyndburn pensioners will cease to be eligible for the concession, thus increasing their television licence payment from ú5 per year to ú84.50; recognises that the concessionary system has long caused anger and confusion amongst many pensioners who were not entitled and believes that all pensioners should receive television licences free of charge as a recognition of a lifetime's work; further believes that such a proposal would not seriously increase the cost of the licence for other licence payers; and therefore calls on the Government to introduce free television licences for all pensioners as a matter of urgency.
