Conservative Party Broadcast (No. 2)
EDM number 1097 in 1993-94, proposed by Jeff Rooker on 21/04/1994.
That this House recalls that the Conservative Party broadcast of Wednesday 6th April an example was used of the increase in the cost of painting a yellow line in Waltham Forest, where, due to administrative charges the quote of ú40 became a cost of ú1,600; is of the opinion that the broadcast intended to convey the impression that the difference was due to Waltham Forest being a Labour Council; notes that the incident referred to was the provision under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of a parking bay at no cost to the embassy concerned; understands that because this was the first time this had been requested by a diplomat in the borough a new local order had to be made at the cost of ú484; recognises that the Convention and the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 required two notices in the London Gazette at a cost of ú400 and two separate notices in local newspapers at a cost of ú600; accepts that to these costs were added ú10 to mark the carriageway and ú100 to erect a sign and post making a grant total of ú1594; acknowledges the Borough of Waltham Forest complied with the law in a way every other local authority would be required to; believes this information was available to those who encouraged Saatchi & Saatchi to make the broadcast; and condemns the Conservative party for seeking to imply the extra costs only came about because Waltham Forest is Labour controlled.
