Violation Of Human Rights In Tunisia

That this House deplores the consistent violation in Tunisia of the basic rights of life, liberty, security of person and to freedom from arbitrary detention, contained in Articles 3, 5 and 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; draws attention to the Amnesty International reports of 1993-94, which state that over the past three years, thousands of suspected political opponents and their families have been subjected to arbitrary arrest, held in illegally prolonged incommunicado detention, tortured or ill treated, and imprisoned after unfair trials; is concerned that the sophisticated human rights language and human rights bodies that have been established by the Tunisian Government have patently failed to achieve their purpose; and calls on the Tunisian Government to take immediate steps to end the systematic perpetration of human rights violations of the past three years.
