Conduct Of The Leader Of The Opposition (No 2)

EDM number 992 in 1992-93, proposed by David Shaw on 02/12/1992.

That this House is concerned that the Leader of the Opposition has worked closely for the last 10 years with Councillor J. Brooks, Labour Leader of Monklands District Council, and as the honourable Member of Parliament for Monklands East he has willingly become closely identified with the way in which Monklands District Council and the local Labour Party operate; believes that all honourable Members must have the courage to tell their Council leaders when they are not behaving in the public interest; notes that Early Day Motion No. 991 details a number of actions by Monklands District Council which cannot be in the interests of the people of Airdrie and Coatbridge; believes the Leader of the Opposition's reluctance to become involved in opposition to Councillor Brooks is not in the public interest; further believes his comment to the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser that 'I am not in a position to comment' is wholly inadequate for someone who has been so closely associated with his local Council for the last nine years; and calls on the Leader of the Opposition to show his judgemental and leadership qualities by explaining to Councillor Brooks how a council should be run in the public interest and by finally telling Councillor Brooks to resign.

This motion has been signed by a total of 10 MPs.
