Birds Of Prey
EDM number 96 in 1992-93, proposed by DN Campbell-Savours on 19/05/1992.
That this House notes the very substantial file held by the honourable Member for Workington, relating to the actions of the RSPB nationally; notes the case of Mr John Miles, who resigned as a reserve warden with the RSPB in 1991, following 14 years of devoted service in the cause of wildlife protection; notes that John Miles resigned on a point of principle following the illegal killing by Geltsdale gamekeepers of protected, schedule 1 birds on moorland leased to the RSPB by a landowner; believes that the RSPB, rather than upset the estate owner, decided to turn a blind eye to illegal activity taking place on the moor shared with the estate; notes that when Mr Miles raised this issue with the Press, against the wishes of the RSPB, attempts were made to move him to another reserve in the South of England; expresses concern at the fact that, rather than move, John Miles resigned from the Society to become self employed; and asks why a number of people have left the employment of the RSPB over the years in similar circumstance.
