Broadgreen Hospital Accident And Emergency Department
EDM number 934 in 1992-93, proposed by Edward O'Hara on 24/11/1992.
That this House views with extreme concern the proposal to close the Accident and Emergency Department at Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool; doubts the capacity of the Royal Liverpool, Fazakerley and Whiston hospitals to accommodate casualties diverted from Broadgreen; foresees likely consequences of cardiac and trauma casualties dying in ambulances, pressure on scarce general and specialist beds, patients discharged prematurely to release beds, and patients spending hours on stretchers and trolleys; notes that these problems will be compounded by the related proposal to close a further 500 beds; recognises that these proposals are based on consideration of cost rather than demand; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Health to take due account of the effects on health of unemployment, poverty and deprivation and of the exceptional incidence of cancers, cardiac and respiratory diseases on Merseyside, and thus to review appropriately the per capita allocation to the purchasing authority.
