British Transport Police On London Underground
EDM number 924 in 1992-93, proposed by Andrew Mackinlay on 24/11/1992.
That this House rejects the proposals contained in the consultation document The Future Status of the British Transport Police that would lead to the removal of the much valued and highly regarded British Transport Police from its role of policing London's Underground; believes that the Metropolitan Police are unable to fully, or adequately, replace the Transport Police in providing police cover to passengers, managers or staff of London's Underground, having regard to the underfunding that handicaps the Metropolitan Police in fulfilling their existing duties and that they also lack the special skills which the Transport Police have uniquely developed over many decades; remembers the bravery of members of the British Transport Police at the Kings Cross Tube disaster, their important role in promoting and maintaining safety and considers that the proposals are an affront to all ranks of the Force; further notes their specialism in combating vandalism and fraud on the Underground; but above all else, knows that all passengers, particularly women and those using the tube late at night, demand that the numbers of British Transport Police on stations and trains should be increased and not extinguished.
