Westoe Colliery

EDM number 805 in 1992-93, proposed by Ronnie Campbell on 11/11/1992.

That this House is appalled at the decision of British Coal and the President of the Board of Trade for placing in jeopardy the future of Westoe Colliery in South Shields, which employs over 1,100 people in an area which has one of the highest levels of unemployment in mainland Britain; and notes that Westoe Colliery has a workforce which has regularly produced over 1.5 million tonnes per annum, and has substantial coal reserves which should be worked for the benefit of the nation.
