Mansfield 2010-Pit Closures
EDM number 761 in 1992-93, proposed by Alan Meale on 06/11/1992.
That this House congratulates the organisation Mansfield 2010, based in Nottinghamshire, a body representing local business in and around the Mansfield area, for its compilation, publication and distribution of its brief, The Heseltine Argument, which examined the present Government's role in the recently announced British Coal closure programmes involving 31 pits throughout the United Kingdom; agrees with the brief's conclusions that such proposals represent a mad scheme which would inevitably lead to those coalfield communities affected experiencing massive devastation in their areas, with little hope or guarantees being given by Government of the supply of adequate levels of economic relief and support necessary to regenerate these areas; and calls upon the President of the Board of Trade and other Ministers to learn from this document and to change their present harmful strategic direction, which is having such a damaging effect upon the mining industry and those people who live in mining areas or rely upon British coal.
