That this House congratulates the management and trade unions at General Motors, Ellesmere Port following the successful launch of the new engine plant; notes that the productivity in the assembly plant, bettering German standards, was achieved by collective bargaining; recognises the importance of this plant to British exports; further recognises the importance of the vehicle building to Britain's economic recovery; and urges the Government to take urgent action to stimulate greater investment into the industry, including direct support in research and development, and for projects aimed at improving environmental performance and safety of new vehicles, which will be key factors in future world markets.
