Future Of Magnox Reactors
EDM number 754 in 1992-93, proposed by Martyn Jones on 05/11/1992.
That this House, in view of the very real concerns of residents of North Wales and elsewhere, calls upon the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate to resist granting permission for Nuclear Electric to restart Trawsfynydd nuclear reactor, as restarting it could only be achieved by lowering safety standards, since Nuclear Electric propose running this and other magnox reactors with brittle welds hot to keep the steel soft; notes that this would not apply during start up and, in addition, air flow over the concrete biological shield would have to be reduced with risk of disintegration; notes that at Trawsfynydd, in particular, two tie rods are broken within the reactor; and further stresses to Her Majesty's Government that it will not tolerate the risk of a serious nuclear accident on this small and overcrowded island.
