Water Company Profits
EDM number 718 in 1992-93, proposed by Paul Tyler on 03/11/1992.
That this House notes that Thames Water has announced record six-monthly profits and that the 10 water companies are amongst the most profitable companies in British industry; further notes that eight out of 10 water companies have agreed to some small curbs to charge increases after pressure from the OFWAT regulator, Ian Byatt; condemns South West Water and North West Water for ignoring Mr Byatt's pleas to reduce price increases; congratulates Mr Byatt for his attempts to protect consumers and businesses faced with rocketing water bills; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to limit the power of the water companies to exploit their natural monopoly by introducing a system of automatic rebates to consumers and industry to curb excessive prices and stop increases in bills and disconnections.
