Lomax Open Cast Site And Pit Closures
EDM number 715 in 1992-93, proposed by Terry Lewis on 02/11/1992.
That this House reaffirms its strong support for the borough councils of Wigan and Bolton together with the City of Salford in their longstanding opposition to the plans of British Coal to opencast mine on the Lomax site in Greater Manchester; recognises the threat to deep mines' jobs occasioned by the policy of extending opencast operations; reaffirms, therefore, its intention to give every assistance to Wigan, Bolton and Salford in their fight to preserve deep mines' jobs, and the amenity of local residents by opposing in a principled way the Lomax proposals; and avers that such opposition is even more apposite, now, in view of British Coal's wish to close 31 collieries including Parkside, the last remaining pit in the Lancashire coalfield with the loss of 741 jobs, 332 of which are residents of the Wigan Metropolitan Borough area.
