Kenya Elections
EDM number 691 in 1992-93, proposed by Peter Hain on 28/10/1992.
That this House, whilst mindful of the difficulties inherent in Kenya's move from a one-party state to a multi-party democracy, notes with concern the Kenyan Government's delay in registering political parties wishing to contest the election; views with disquiet that government's misuse of the civil service and police to prevent the publication of material critical of government actions and to intimidate opponents; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to have regard to the actions rather than the words of the Kenyan Government; and calls also upon Her Majesty's Government to restore the respect with which Kenyans used to regard Britain by pressing President Moi's Government to desist from such actions forthwith and move rapidly towards free and fair elections.
This motion has been signed by a total of 30 MPs.
